London has got to be my favourite city in Europe for many reasons:
- There’s always stuff going on here; let’s be real it’s it is the city to be
- You can meet people from everywhere and anywhere
- There are so many sick fitness studios, from reformer to yoga to boxing
- It’s pretty much foodie heaven
No matter if you’re a true Londoner, if you’re living here temporarily or simply visiting, there are so many amazing foodie spots to be discovered in the city. Whether you’ve just spent last night having a few drinks too many at that new rooftop bar, or you’re just coming back from a crazy sweaty Barry’s workout, you’re probably in need for some brunch. Now brunch doesn’t simply constitute of some eggs at an awkward time of day, no no, a good brunch place must combine a cafe with a comfy but trendy set-up, good coffee, lots of healthy options and just a feel good vibe, cuz man, you can’t eat brunch in a place with a bad vibe. It just don’t work. Now I’ve tried many brunch spots in London, and here below is the ultimate guide of the best of the best. So go ahead, eat up and enjoy. Continue Reading
I always felt like there are certain dishes where an “average” recipe just doesn’t cut it. Hell, for some dishes a “good” recipe doesn’t cut it either. For all those ultimate classics such as chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies and banana bread, only an outta-this-world, dis-is-madness kinda recipes will do. It’s the sort of recipes that get passed on generation on generation, with the original recipe being scribbled on some semi-deteriorating old piece of paper kept in a safe somewhere. But in the end, the pen fades out and you can’t really read the recipe all that well and it gets lost forever. So thought I’d save my great grand-children the pain and just publish it here so they can check up on my blog whenever they wanna make some dope-ass nana bread. All jokes aside, this recipe is totally safe-worthy. I made it for the entire Food Matters team a few months back and they absolutely loved it. And that really means something; there’s hardly ever been a crew of such avid foodies 😉
I used to roll my eyes at these “express your feelings”, “show gratitude”, “be mindful” kind of posts. I guess you could say I’ve never been the most sensitive or emotional person out there, and always preferred the cold, hard facts. I’ve always preferred macro-tracking to intuitive eating and structured lifting sets to improvised yoga flows. In the past year I’ve experienced so much that has not only led to a complete change of my mindset, but I finally feel in complete peace and security with myself. I’ve changed my mindset from I’m happy, confident and feel good, to how can I continuously grow, learn and develop. I don’t have it all figured out, heck I’m still only at the beginning of this beautiful wellness journey I’ve embarked on. One of the major habits that I’ve picked up over the past year is journaling. This is something that my wonderful friend Stef introduced me to, and I have her to thank for the great changes it has brought to my life. Basically I answer the same set of questions every morning before I start my day, and in the evening before going to bed. I’ll be honest and say I go through phases of doing it religiously, and stopping for sometimes weeks at a time. I never meant for it to add extra stress to my life, so I don’t worry if I don’t have time every single day. I know however that it’s brought me nothing but more clarity and positivity. It makes me think of a quote I read that says: What your mind thinks your body feels. Just the act of sitting and thinking of something that your grateful for, that makes you happy, that makes you smile, will breed positive thoughts, and is scientifically proven to decrease depression and anxiety. Below are the questions I answer; the simple journaling exercise that will totally change your outlook and very possibly you’re entire freakin life 😉 Continue Reading
As I’ve progressed in my health journey, my pallet has changed immensely. I used to be a huge sweet tooth, with chocolate, brownies and caramel being my ultimate weakness. Hell I used to start my day with 2 slices of the world’s whitest bread, topped with butter AND a crap-tone of chocolate powder…get this…DUNKED IN A HOT CHOCOLATE. Like what is that breakfast!? And then you know what I would bring as a snack to school? Chocolate powder in a zip lock… I’m not even kidding. Everyone would take out their zip-locks full of chocolate powder at recess, link their fingers, dunk in the powder and repeat… Don’t judge me, it’s what the cool kids did. In any case, moving away from eating my body weight in Nestle chocolate powder on a daily basis, has caused my taste buds to change as well. I slowly moved to eating fruit as my only form of sugar, to even cutting down my fruit intake to only about 1 serving a day. Where I used to fill my green smoothies with banana, apple and mango, I now don’t put any fruit in them at all. And you know what? I like them even better without. This is my new go-to green smoothie, so satisfying, so delicious, yet not heavy, not sweet, and jaaaaam packed to the frikin rim with all the vitamins ever. Enjoy! Continue Reading
Even though I’ve spent 5 years of my life living in Singapore, and go back every holiday to see my parents, I still have somehow never posted a Healthy City Guide to this amazing city. I’ll be honest and say that it’s probs cuz when I lived there at 16 I was more in a position to write a Guide to Best Ladies Night Clubs rather than where to get the best green juice, but over the past few years I’ve tried out many of the new healthy spots in the city and I have to say, the wellness scene there is definitely a whole lot less lame than I thought.
In Singapore there are 3 main things to do: eat, drink and shop. By eat, most mean either in world-renown high-class restaurants run by Michelin-star chefs or at delicious, ridiculously cheap local food stalls. No one means lavish salads and wholesome brunch food. And by drink, most mean either Singapore Slings at one of the city’s many rooftop bars or local beer in a Korean Karaoke Pub. No one means green juices and kombucha. But I have to say, although the health and wellness scene is only just starting off in Singapore, it’s definitely there, and many brave souls have tapped into the health trend and opened businesses that now make it easy for anyone visiting this massively modern city to eat well and keep active (between Fried Rice dinners and nights out at Clarke Quay of course). I decided that I just absolutely had to put up a recipe for Valentines day. When deciding what to make, I wanted to make sure that whatever I made, it would be a single portion size so that all my single girls #HollaAtMe could enjoy a lil solo v-day treat as well. Plus food is bae and I don’t wanna be sharing that with noooobody, anyone with me? In any case, I tried to think of what is the ultimate cutest and most comforting pastry ever. Obviously mini strawberry tartlets came to mind, cuz how freakin cute are they? Yeah they’re adorbs. So here is my modified version. Way healthier, way lighter, refined sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free…but equally delicious IF NOT MORE SO 😉 Enjoy and happy Valentines day! Remember, it’s the day of love to be spent with those you love the most (AKA the gym & good food in my case) <3 Continue Reading
The classic saying goes “working out is the easy part, what’s hard is diet”. I don’t necessarily think either are particularly easy nor are they that hard, but proper nutrition can definitely be more difficult to navigate. In today’s word of fad diets, misleading “health” food advertising and the internet breeding a ridiculous amount of false information, it’s easy to fall into a trap, thinking you’re doing your body good, when really you’re simply doing it more harm. Knowing how to get started with healthy eating is often the hardest part, but there’s no need to overcomplicate it. With these 10 easy healthy food swaps, you’ll be on your way to a healthier diet, and a better, fitter and stronger you. Continue Reading
There’s nothing fresher than a good ol’ raw ricepaper roll packed with aaaall the veggies. I had been seeing so many gorgeous #ricepaperroll pics on Insta the past few weeks, that I just had to try my hand at them too. Surprisingly, they’re actually completely idiot-proof! I was expecting this whole debacle to go similarly to that time I tried to make sushi AKA toppings falling all over the floor, nothing’s sticking in the right place, kitchen’s now a mess, rest of the afternoon spent cleaning, don’t even have a decent sushi roll to show for it etc. etc. etc. BUT these babies are actually so simple and so diverse, you can make them with pretty much anything and everything and they’ll taste good. Part of the reason for that is probably the substantial amount of peanut butter in the dressing….but there’s no such thing as too much peanut butter am I right or am I right?? Continue Reading
Morning has always been my favourite time of the day. Every morning is an opportunity to reset, restart and slay the day ahead. About 2 years ago I made the promise to myself that I would do 30 minutes of yoga as soon as I wake up every single day. This simple yoga routine opened my eyes to the incredible power of having a good, healthy morning ritual. Waking up even only 20 minutes earlier can change everything, from your mindset, your productivity, your physical health, positivity and mental wellbeing. The world of morning rituals can be slightly hard to navigate with some swearing by wheatgrass shots and oil pulling, others by ice baths and colonics, all of which sound incredibly unattractive and definitely not what I want to be doing first thing in the morning. Here are 5 easy steps to creating your own morning ritual that works for you. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wake up at 4am to get it all done, it can be short and sweet, as long as your mind’s in it, the benefits will be major.
Freakshakes have been all the rage lately. They have literally taken over my InstaFeed, somehow making me crave chocolate sauce, sprinkles and ice cream immediately. Like man it’s 7am, get out of my face with your drool-worthy, diabetes-inducing megashake. In any case, I just had to try my hand at “healthifying” these beasts of a beverage. When deciding upon a flavour I simply asked myself: “What is my all-time favourite junk food?” Movie theatre snacks came straight to mind. Considering I don’t like movies, the snacks were really the only thing that kept me going back to the box office. I mean, nothing’s better than that popcorn + peanut M&M’s combo. Soooo 2 and 2 came together, and VOILA! The ultimate blockbuster freakshake was born. On top of being NEXT LEVEL DELICIOUS, it’s also vegan, gluten-free, paleo, refined sugar-free…basically veggies. Yes madame, your freakshake is a mix of fruit, veggies and nuts. Now you can go ahead and indulge. See ya on the flip-side, when you’ve died and gone to freakshake heaven. Continue Reading
