Eating Seasonally: In October we eat Squash

I’ve said it a thousand times but I’ll say it again, I’m a totally water-baby, beach-bum, summer-lover, whatever you want to call it. Essentially I’m happiest in denim cut-offs and a bikini top. But there’s something so cozy and magical about fall, I really can’t put my finger on it. There’s something about strolling in the fresh morning air, hearing the crunching of fallen leaves under your feet and the smell of spiced everything. I also completely believe in eating with the seasons. As winter approaches, mother nature gives us slightly heavier, starchier veggies to fill up on. Squash is one of my seasonal favs. It’s so high in vitamin A and vitamin C, being the perfect pre-winter health booster, while the high-fibre content keeps you nice and full for long winter days. I’ve been pushing myself to experiment with different types of squash, and so far here are my fav ways to use this gorgeous veg in October:

Eating Seasonally Health Lifestyle September

Eating seasonally: In September we eat apples

A few weeks back I decided to start a seasonal eating series focusing on one item of produce in season each month. When deciding what fruit or vegetable to pick for September it wasn’t too hard to chose. I used to go apple picking every September as a kid. Naturally since I used to find the actual act of picking so fun, we’d end up coming home with kilos and kilos of apples. This meant that the month of September was usually spent eating apple-everything in attempts to ingest the 3kg before they go bad. We usually managed pretty well, and that’s essentially because there’s SO much you can do with these babies. On top of being versatile, easy to carry around, perfect to cook and/or eat raw and having a long shelf-life, they’re paaaacked with antioxidants and are super high in dietary fibre. The fibre in apples can help feel you full, regulate your bowels, reduce cholesterol and improve your health health. So go to the market (or orchard if you can), stock up and check out my recipes and ideas below for how to use them! You’ll love em to the core I promise 😉  Continue Reading

August Eating Seasonally Health Lifestyle

Eating Seasonally: in August we eat melon

I’ve been super focused lately on eating seasonally and locally. In Switzerland we’re lucky enough to get amazing produce grown right here in the country, and I’ve decided to fully embrace that. That might mean giving up bananas and avocados for the time being, but hey, with deliciously sweet berries and stone fruit freakin everywhere, I can’t complain. This month I’ve decided to focus on melon. Cantaloupe melon is an amazing source of vitamin A & C while having anti-inflammatory properties. Honeydew melon is rich in potassium (so ciaaaoo nanas, hello honeydew 😉 while watermelon is hella hydrating (perfect for hot summer days since they’re over 90% water). So all in all, go grab some melons (can’t say that with a straight face), and dig in. If you’re looking for some inspo on what do with them, check out my recipes and ideas below!  Continue Reading
